"....sins of the few"

Recently a  popular weekly news magazine reported scandals within the church with particular reference to the catholic church. It also reported how there was moral depravity within the church including the salacious activities of the church fathers exercising their hierarchical rights over the hapless nuns. These accounts were based on the reports received from critics within the catholic church,in addition to the accounts from people who have deserted the catholic church. The articled ended with the wake up call to the church authority to initiate reforms within the church and instructed the laity to be aware of the nefarious activities of its leaders.

Disturbing facts as they are i was taken back by the fact that the media is engaging in a seething attacking on the church while ignoring the contribution made by the church (catholic, protestant and pentecostal) for the betterment of the nation and its citizens.Though the same attack has been mounted on the Hindu religious gurus and on the people who call themselves as the avatars of god its not a consolation for a christian in India who can been be taken for a ride by the media and its likes.

A fitting reply was given by Dr John Dayal (the full article can be read here )who is a former head of the All India Catholic Council in the same magazine who was indignant about the way the church was portrayed by the media. It was not a defense without introspection and he had rightly highlighted the contribution made by the church at large to the nation citing examples like St Stephens Delhi and Christian Medical College Vellore at the same time taking stock of the ills that befall the church at the leadership level.

Having spent a part of my lifetime as a doctor in a remote area of the state of Jharkand,i can personally vouch for the catholic Nuns who work tirelessly in the remote areas of the jungle providing education to the children of the marginalised and the downtrodden with utmost compassion and care. You cant even imagine a   hut in those remote areas leave alone a school! They were also instrumental in giving health care by being the first point of contact to the people and give appropriate referral to the needy.

Though advertising a charity is not the christian  way , i am convinced that the defense of the work done in the name of the kingdom of god cannot be ignored nor taken for granted by the world where god is a commodity and "means" to an end rather than the end in himself. In a secularized society where attacks like these are not uncommon i feel that the christian workers should be ready with the defense of the kingdom work at large at the same time looking within the church ( not only the visible establishment but also the invisible church within each christian) with deep introspection regarding where we have gone wrong in the light of gods word. For i believe along with apostle paul that "...we have been made for good work".

Dr John Dayal demanded an apology from the newsgroup and media for ignoring the contribution of the church and indicated that they might do remorse by putting a front page article on the contributions of the church to the society and not resort to cheap tactics of TRP ratings and sensationalism. He rightly mentioned that the "...the sins of the few cannot be vested upon the church as a whole"

It also gives a wake up call to the christian workers like us and the church as a body to shed all our differences (albeit without compromising the core christian doctrines) and to deepen our conviction in the kingdom work so that we may not be found suffering and glorified for "nothing"!
